Dennis or Dex?
Comedian, Magician and Communications Educator
After decades of captivating audiences at countless events, the pandemic brought my world to a sudden stop. Like many, I found myself wondering if life—and performing—would ever return to normal. I deeply missed the joy of sharing my magic and comedy with others.
Then, one sunny day, a simple twist of fate sparked a new beginning. A Starbucks barista misheard my name and wrote "Dex" on my cup instead of Dennis. That simplified version of my name struck a chord, and I realized it would make a great character stage name for a magician. As we began to emerge from the pandemic, I embraced this new persona and relaunched my company as "Dex Comedy Magic." My mission was clear: to help people reconnect and bring laughter and wonder back into their lives. While my friends and family still call me by my given name, I like to think that Dex is the facet of my personality that performs.
Experienced at what I do.
With over 30 years of experience as a professional magician and entertainer, I’ve had the privilege of performing at nearly every type of event imaginable. These years have honed my skills and sharpened my awareness of what makes an event truly successful. Through this journey, I’ve developed a quick-witted, improvisational style of comedy magic that keeps audiences engaged and entertained. While I have a particular love for close-up magic, I also offer an intimate cabaret-style show for larger gatherings. Whether performing for a small group or a large audience, my goal is always to create a magical, funny, and memorable experience. My shows are anything but typical. I use familiar, everyday items—rather than traditional magic props—to create surprising, one-of-a-kind magical moments. Every performance is infused with audience-appropriate humor, ensuring that guests don’t just watch the show—they become a part of it.
When I’m not performing at restaurants, bars, or private events, I work as a communications educator at the University of Colorado Health Sciences. It is a great job with flexible hours. I teach communication skills to medical students and professionals. For the last two years, I have been enjoying work also as a "Simulation Technician," running a high-fidelity medical simulation mannequin for medical students in a variety of ER simulations. This work is incredibly fulfilling and, in many ways, it enhances my ability to connect with audiences during my performances.
Finally, I call Centennial, a suburb just south of Denver, CO my home, with my wife, son, two dogs, and a cat. In my leisure time, I’m an avid tenkara fly fisherman and a creative woodworker. I enjoy crafting specialty fishing spools and other unique objects in my woodshop.
